Murchison Falls National Park is named for a spectacular waterfall on the Victoria Nile river as it explodes over the rift valley above Lake Albert. It is Uganda’s largest national park and home to plenty of wildlife including lions, elephants and buffalo.

Murchison Falls National Park: Introduction

Also known as the Kabalega National Park, the Murchison Falls National Park is popularly known for having the world’s most powerful waterfall that emits large volumes of water about 300 cubic meters per second or 11,000 ft³/s at a very powerful pressure that cause the surrounding to tremble. The park was first gazetted in 1927 and today is the largest park in Uganda covering an area of 3840 sq km / 1483 sq miles. It is commonly visited for Uganda Safari Tours because of its diverse safari activities and rich wildlife.

How to get there

Paraa, the main tourist hub in Murchison Falls National Park, is located 300km/186mi north of the capital Kampala. The road via the town of Masindi is now surfaced in its entirety and the drive takes at least 6 hours*. On this route there is the possibility of stopping at Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch to track rhinos. Coming from the southwest, the 320km/199mi drive to Paraa from Fort Portal via the towns of Hoima and Bulisa (also now surfaced all the way) takes at least 6 hours*.

It is also possible to fly to the park by chartered or scheduled aircraft service from Entebbe International Airport (EBB), or from Kajjansi Airfield near Kampala. Pakuba Airfield is the most convenient point of arrival for the main cluster of camps and lodges around the park headquarters at Paraa. Other options are Chobe or Bugungu Airfields.

Best time to visit

Wildlife viewing in Murchison Falls National Park is generally good at all times of year, although best during the Dry season (December to February). However, January and February can be very hot. Scenery is more beautiful during the Wet season from March to November.

The climate in Murchison Falls National Park is tropical and hot. Temperatures are quite uniform throughout the year. Daytime temperatures typically peak at around 30°C/86°F, cooling down at night to about 19°C/66°F. The Wet season runs from March to November, with a drier period from June to July. There is little rain during the Dry season (December to February).
