Linyanti Concession

This prime Big 5 safari area is on the southern banks of the Linyanti River, where the Savute marsh subsides into lagoons and steadily flowing rivers with riverine forests of jackalberry and sausage trees. It is a prime game viewing area covering almost 5000 sq km in the south west of Chobe National Park. It is here that some of the best wildlife documentaries have been made for National Geographic by Derek and Beverely Joubert.

Linyanti Concession: Introduction

The Savuti region covers an area approximately 5000 sq km in the south west of Chobe National Park and became well known with the drying up of the Savuti Channel in the early 1980s. Even more so, it is known as an incredible game viewing paradise. The Savuti Channel started flowing again after 30 years.

The pans and pumped water holes become the major attractions during the dry winter months when the natural water supplies dry up. The area is considered one of the continent's last wild and unspoiled wilderness areas. During the rainy summer months many animals migrate to the fertile Savute Marsh.

The Savute Marsh area is well known for its coverage in a number of well-known wildlife documentaries, especially the National Geographic films by Dereck and Beverly Joubert. The landscape consists of rich grasslands, savannah woodland and a large variety of trees and vegetation. A Big 5 safari will take visitors on game drives to spot the amazing variety of game on offer in Linyanti Savuti area.

How to get there & Best time to visit

How to get there

Most travelers arrive in the Linyanti Concession by charter plane. Wilderness Safaris, which runs the camps in Linyanti, includes flights in its package, or otherwise makes the necessary arrangements. You can fly from either Maun or Kasane (or other camps in Botswana). There are no scheduled flights to anywhere close to Linyanti.

If you’re staying at the public campsite, which lies just outside the concession’s boundaries, you can drive there. However, the access road is extremely sandy and you’ll need a high-clearance 4WD vehicle and a good GPS device.

Maun International Airport (MUB) or Kasane International Airport (BBK) are the entry points into the country for most visitors on their way to Linyanti.

Best time to visit

The Linyanti Concession can be visited year-round, but the best time for general wildlife viewing (especially elephants) is during the dry months, from May to October. Animals disperse during the wetter months, which means fewer sightings from November to April. The exception, apart from waterbirds along the Linyanti River, is the zebra migration. In November, zebras foal in the Savuti region of Chobe National Park, and they gather around Linyanti between February and April.

The climate in the Linyanti Concession is warm to hot. However, mornings can get very chilly in the Dry season (April to October), so pack warm clothing for early morning game drives and boat trips. The climate can be broken into two major seasons: the Wet and the Dry.
